Rose lifted her cup, listening to the conversation at the table behind Chloe.
Guy said, âI bought a sheep on the way up as you suggestedâ¦â
âAlive?â asked Alex.
âOf course it was alive. A dead sheep is little use to a Samburu tribesman. Our friend was delighted. Showed me the spot near the river where a small pride of lions hang out. We also found a leopard. On the eastern side of Koitogor, near the desert rose shrub we inspected last time.â
âThatâs great news. You did pay him? Besides the sheep?â The men paused as their coffees were placed on the table. They didnât look up, but waited until the waitress left.
Guy answered. âI did. He demanded double, twenty thousand shillings.â
Alex whistled. âChancer. Did you pay him?â
Guy placed his cup back on the table. âThought it best to. Donât want any trouble at the moment. On the plus side, he agreed to send a group of dancers to entertain our guests in the evening.â
Guy stretched his arms. âHow long do we have to hang around in Nanyuki? I could do with returning to Nairobi.â
âUntil Fridayâs memorial service. The police said we can leave after that,â replied Alex.
Guy rolled his shoulders. âI didnât think they were investigating Eloiseâs death.â
âJust routine, apparently. Mostly paperwork. Daniel Chandler called. They contacted him about Eloiseâs will.â
âHow dare they!â Guy slammed the table with his fist.
âCalm down. Daniel was suitably vague. I doubt theyâll probe any further.â
âI hope not.â
A stooped man, his face as weathered as a rock, shambled over to their table. âYoung Alex, thought it was you. Whatâs your tip for the Derby this Sunday?â
Guy stood. âIâm going to the bank.â He walked out of Dormanâs.
âDo you think that means anything?â Chloe flicked her hair, pinning her long locks back with her sunglasses as a cloud passed overhead.
âDonât know,â said Rose.
Her attention was caught by a movement at the next table. The old man hobbled away. His place was taken by Hellen. She deposited a number of shopping bags before settling at the table opposite Alex. She clasped her hands together. âI hope you werenât discussing horse racing. You know we canât afford it. Have you paid Eddie last monthâs training fees?â
âNot yet.â Alex mumbled something else which Rose didnât catch.
Hellen exclaimed. âOh, Alex, this has to stop. Why not sell Desert Rose? She has breeding, could make a good brood mare. Use the money to pay Eddie. You will also have to start paying off your bill with the Mwaria family. No more betting, my dear.â
A voice said, âI thought you landed a gamble this weekend.â
âShut up, Guy. Did you get some money from the bank?â Guy sat down next to Hellen. He gulped his coffee.
âIsnât that cold?â Hellen asked.
âAs the grave. Be patient. Weâll have the money soon.â
Chloe and Rose eyed each other with raised eyebrows.
